Diffuser or absorber? Read this first

Two different jobs. An absorber (like acoustic foam) soaks sound up — great for taming overall loudness and bass buildup. A diffuser like this one scatters reflections so they don't slap straight back at your ears — it makes a room sound natural and lively instead of dead or boomy. Most great-sounding rooms use both: foam at first-reflection points, diffusers on the back and side walls. We'd rather you buy the right thing once than return the wrong one.

Technical reference — STC, NRC, and what a diffuser does

Two acoustic numbers come up when people shop for wall panels:

• NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient): how much sound a material absorbs. Decorative PET felt typically sits around NRC 0.30–0.55 depending on thickness and the air gap behind it. For comparison, thick premium acoustic foam runs higher (roughly NRC 0.70–0.95) — that's the trade-off between "looks great on the wall" and "maximum absorption."
• STC (Sound Transmission Class): how much sound a full wall assembly blocks between rooms. STC describes the wall (studs, drywall, insulation), not a panel mounted on it — so no decorative panel, ours included, carries a meaningful STC rating.

Honest answer: this panel's job is diffusion — scattering reflections so your room sounds clearer and more natural — plus looking great doing it.
