How the putty pad works

Electrical outlets are holes in your wall that act like direct tunnels for noise. A single-gang box removes about 16 square inches of drywall and leaves a thin steel or plastic shell in its place. Two boxes back-to-back in the same stud cavity can pull a well-built STC 55 wall down into the low 40s. This pad wraps the back and sides of the box to seal the leak.

1. High-mass putty: The dense, non-hardening putty adds critical mass to thin plastic or metal outlet boxes, reflecting sound back instead of letting it pass through.

2. Acoustic sealing: It creates an airtight gasket around wires and box edges, stopping the flanking noise that bypasses your insulation.

3. Intumescent formula: Designed to expand under heat and help close the opening around the box, to the requirements of ASTM E119 / UL 263 for wall-opening protective materials.

Result: Restores the sound-blocking integrity your wall was built for, in under 5 minutes per box.

What the numbers mean

STC (Sound Transmission Class) — the rating of the whole wall. An untreated outlet box is the most common weak link; sealing it lets the wall perform at its designed rating instead of leaking around the insulation.

ASTM E119 / UL 263 — the fire-resistance test for wall assemblies with recessed boxes. This pad is designed to the requirements of that standard for wall-opening protective materials. Fire-rated use requires installation in accordance with the applicable listed system and local code.

Oversized 15 × 20 cm sheet — covers a single- or double-gang box with the ½ in (12 mm) overlap onto the stud that firestop installations call for. Overlap two pads for larger boxes.

Honest note: Putty pads are essential for wall soundproofing but work best when used on both sides of a shared wall (back-to-back outlets) and paired with wall insulation. Fire-resistance and sound-transmission performance are properties of the complete wall assembly, not the pad alone.

What's in the box

  • 12, 24 or 48 putty pads. Each pad is 15 × 20 × 0.3 cm (6 × 8 × ⅛ in)
  • Pre-applied self-adhesive backing on every pad
  • Step-by-step install guide

Simple 4-step installation

  1. Remove: Take off the outlet faceplate. Switch the power off at the breaker if you will be near wires.
  2. Peel: Remove the release liner, handling the pad by its edges.
  3. Mold: Wrap the pad firmly around the back and sides of the electrical box. Slit the pad at each cable or conduit, work the putty around it and pinch closed.
  4. Seal: Press the edges to create an airtight bond against the stud and drywall, then replace the faceplate.

No drill. No nails. No contractor.

New construction: install at rough-in, after wiring and before drywall, and lap the pad at least ½ in onto the stud face and the back of the wallboard. Existing walls: work the pad around the box from the front and seal the gap between box and wallboard before refitting the plate.

Frequently asked questions

Will this stop a noisy neighbor?

Partially. Putty pads are one component of a soundproofing system. They stop noise leaking through electrical outlets, the most common weak link in a wall. They will not block 100% of the noise on their own, but they stop sound bypassing your wall insulation. For maximum reduction, treat the outlets on both sides of the shared wall.

Does this pad fit all electrical boxes?

Yes. The putty is highly moldable and oversized (15 × 20 cm) so it wraps standard single-gang, double-gang and deep plastic or metal junction boxes with the overlap onto the stud. Trim or overlap two pads for larger boxes.

Is it safe to use around wires?

Yes. The material is non-conductive and designed for the exterior of electrical boxes. Do not apply it inside the box or over live terminals, and switch the power off at the breaker while you work.

Is it fire rated?

The pad uses an intumescent putty that is designed to expand under heat and help close the opening around the box, to the requirements of ASTM E119 / UL 263 for wall-opening protective materials. Fire resistance is a property of the complete wall assembly, so fire-rated use requires installation in accordance with the applicable listed system and your local code.

Will the putty dry out or crack over time?

No. The putty is a non-setting, non-hardening formula. It stays flexible and tacky indefinitely, so as your house shifts or vibrates the acoustic seal stays airtight without cracking or shrinking.

Can I use this on existing walls?

Yes. It is easiest at rough-in, before drywall, but you can apply it to existing walls by removing the faceplate and device, molding the putty around the box from the front and sealing the gap between box and drywall. This gives the full acoustic benefit. A front-only retrofit is not a fire-rated installation.

Do I need to apply this to both sides of the wall?

For the best results, yes. Back-to-back outlets in the same wall cavity act like a tunnel for noise. Sealing the boxes in both rooms creates a double barrier and lets the wall reach its designed rating.

Can it get wet, or be painted?

No. It is not a waterproofing product, so keep it away from standing or repeated water. Do not paint it.

What's the difference between impact and airborne noise? 🔊

1. Airborne Noise

  • This travels through the air, like conversations, TV sounds, or barking dogs. When sound waves hit a building, they cause it to vibrate, transmitting through the structure.

2. Impact Noise

  • This results from physical impacts on buildings, such as footsteps, slamming doors, or moving furniture. Impact noise can be harder to isolate, as these vibrations are stronger and travel further through dense materials.

What are decibels? 📏

Decibels are measured logarithmically (not as a percentage) . This means that every increase of 10dB on the scale is a tenfold increase in sound pressure level (SPL) . Near silence is 0dB 🤫, while a sound at 10dB is ten times louder!

  • 30-40 dB = Soft music, whisper 🎶
  • 60-80 dB = Office noise, traffic 🚗
  • 85-100 dB (HARMFUL) = Subway, shouted convo, chainsaw ⚠️
  • 100-140 dB (DANGEROUS) = Chainsaw, loud concert, racing, shooting range 🚨
